
Natural Park“Los Alcornocales”
Natural park “Los Alcornocales”, With an approximate area of 170,000 hectares is situated in western point of Cordillera Bética, by size being the third existing protected natural area of andalusia. The natural park resides in the province of cadiz, except its north-eastern border which resides in the province of malaga. In cadiz, park territory occupies the best part of 16 municipalities (Alcalá de los Gazules, Algar, Algeciras, Arcos de la Frontera, Benalup, Benaocaz, Castellar de la frontera, el Bosque, Jerez de la Frontera, Jimena de la frontera, los Barrios, Medina Sidonia, Prado del Rey, San José del Valle, Tarifa and Ubrique) and one municipality (cortes de la frontera) in the malaga province.
Geographically this natural park boirders with “sierra de Grazalema” in the north; “Campiña Gaditana” in the west; Janda and Sierra de fates in the southwest; the Strait of Gibraltar in the south and with campo de Gibraltar and valley of rio Guadiaro in the southeast and east respectively. Forming the shape of a spindle, park territory has its maximum width of 35 km in east-west direction and approximate length of 80 km from north-south. “Los Alcornicales" consists of mountain chains made up of sharp drops and clear defined slopes, that follows a general north-south direction in the septentrional area and southeast-northeast direction in its third meridional part, with the highest point in the Pico Aljibe (1,092 meters).
